gEvery object with mass that can be affected by gravity has Potential Energy PEg = mgh. If your derby car is in a position to be affected by gravity (resting at the start pin), it has gravitational potential energy. Once the car is in motion it has velocity and the Potential Energy is converted to Kinetic Energy KE = (1/2)mv2, which is the energy of motion. There is a direct relation between gravitational potential energy and the height of an object; the higher that an object raised above the the ground, the greater the gravitational potential energy.

WinDerby Body Blocks...

All bodies on this page are 7" long and 1-3/4" wide. These dimensions are the same as the stock Scout Grand Prix bodies. My blocks are made from either Clear Pine or Clear Poplar (depending on the availability of material).

I offer the standard block with the slotted base as well as precision drilled axles holes for both standard and extended wheelbases. If your rules allow the use of an extended wheelbase you can benefit from a more stable ride as well as the advantage of moving your relative Center of Gravity (CG) a bit further back. This will give you a bit more potential energy to release because scootching your CG back raises your mass slightly higher off the ground. Try this - Drop a golf ball on the sidewalk from the height of your shoulder - then try it again with your arm extended way above your head. What happens when it drops from a greater height? How high did each ball bounce? Which one had more energy to release?

The three holes are drilled at the rear for inserting Lead Wire, Tungsten and WuttyTM to weight the car to the 5 oz maximum. The amount of weight that you put in each hole is totally dependent on your car design and your track condition.

DRILLED STOCK WHEELBASE (DSW)

Some local rules do not allow the use of the long wheelbase - you must use the stock wheelbase length.

These bodies have #44 axle holes drilled at the stock wheelbase locations and three holes in the appropriate locations for Lead or Tungsten. The rear most weight hole is moved further towards the back (like the extended wheelbase body) so you can make better use of your potential energy by scooching the CG back a bit. - see lecture 7

Both bodies meet the Scout specifications for length and width. DXW, of course, stands for Drilled Stock Wheelbase. Please note that these bodies have NO slots. If your rules require slots, see SLOTTED STOCK WHEELBASE below.

The wedge shape makes a faster car and minimizes the finish time. Just a light sanding and your favorite paint and you'll be ready to cross the finish line in no time.TOP

DRILLED EXTENDED WHEELBASE (DXW)

Some local rules do not allow the use of the long wheelbase - you must use the stock wheelbase length. These bodies have #44 axle holes drilled at the stock wheelbase locations and three holes in the appropriate locations for Lead or Tungsten. Both bodies meet the Scout specifications for length and width. DXW, of course, stands for Drilled Extended Wheelbase. Please note that these bodies have NO slots. SLOTTED STOCK WHEELBASE (SSW)

If your local rules require the use of slots in the stock location, then this body is for you. It replicates the Scout Grand Prix body. Slots are in the stock locations and accurately cut on a table saw.

The three holes drilled in the appropriate locations for Lead or Tungsten. The rear most weight hole is moved further towards the back (like the extended wheelbase body) so you can make better use of your potential energy by scooching the CG back a bit. - see lecture 7

The SLIM SSW has the same stock slotted wheelbase as the H51 and is cut down to the fast wedge shape for you. Finish fast for a fast finish! TOP
